Aging can take a difficult toll on the neck. Development of deep, unattractive wrinkles, sagging skin, and fat deposits can give away age even when the face above it looks much younger. In other cases, there is insufficient definition between the chin and neck, creating an unattractive look.  In younger patients with good skin elasticity, we can sculpt the neck with liposuction or by an open approach with a small incision under the chin, take out the fat, and the skin will re-drape evenly.  If the skin has lost its elasticity, however, we may need to pull up on it from behind the ear.  We call this a neck lift.

A necklift can help tighten the skin of the neck, reduce fatty deposits, and eliminate the wattle-like sagging skin that can grow beneath the chin. It can also help increase the definition between the chin and neck. Who Is a Good Candidate for Neck Sculpting?

Anyone who is in generally good health and is unhappy with the look of their neck could be a good candidate for neck sculpting or a face lift procedure.

Candidates for Neck Sculpting are those with:

• Deep wrinkles on neck
• Sagging skin on neck
• Fat deposits on neck
• Insufficient definition between the chin and neck

The Neck Sculpting Procedure

Exactly what your neck surgery entails will be based on your anatomy.  If you have fat deposits in your neck, liposuction might be used to eliminate them. Creating a clearer definition between the chin and neck can involve restructuring the muscle in the front of the neck, known as the platysma muscle. Tightening the skin of the neck to eliminate sagging and deep wrinkles can be achieved by eliminating excess skin and redraping the skin that remains.  Some patients may benefit from a chin implant as well to strengthen a weak jawline.

As with any major surgical procedure, there are some risks but by closely following your post-operative instructions and properly caring for your incisions, as well as taking sufficient time to rest after your surgery, you can greatly reduce the risk of any major side effects or complications.
